A short walk downtown and a bigger yard are both good reasons to pick a house. They aren’t always the same house.
Neither wins automatically. These are the questions I’d use to compare them.
Walk the route to Main Street from the house. Look at crossings, sidewalks, and where you’d park. For an older home, ask about the roof, wiring, plumbing, and permits behind renovations.
Ask who maintains the shared areas and what the HOA covers. Compare the total deal, including HOA dues and the finished cost of the home.
On either side: drive north toward your everyday destinations before deciding the extra distance is worth the house.

Ask for the lot plan and the layout of future phases. Drainage, a planned road, or another row of houses can matter more than the model’s finishes.
